SAVE NUTRITIONAL COMPOUNDS

Recent federal and state government actions greatly limit your health care choices by restricting compounding pharmacies. Compounding is the art and science of creating personalized medicine. It all starts with a problem: the child who can’t swallow pills, the patient with a gluten allergy, the much-needed drug that’s in short supply. For whatever reason, many people aren’t served by mass-produced medications. A compounding pharmacy is able to provide a solution.

Tighter government restrictions are in the process of becoming law. In the past, compounding pharmacies were allowed to make generic drugs at great cost savings to people. New government regulations no longer allow them to produce generic drugs if they are available from a pharmaceutical company. This has increased the cost and affected the quality.

Many natural medicines are on the FDA agenda to be banned. Homeopathics and compounded products like bio-identical hormones, many topical creams and individualized medications are being targeted to become illegal in the USA. Restrictions of over-the-counter supplements may follow as has happened in Europe.

Since enactment of the Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA) in late 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has gone significantly beyond the letter of the law in developing regulations that would limit access to safely compounded medications, especially those that are natural or herbal, and their availability for office use.

The FDA is creating a new list of substances which can be compounded. To date, over 400 nutritional supplements have been submitted for review.  Most have been denied without review.  Only a few have been approved. To date, even the common methylcobalamin (B-12) injection has not been approved.
